HORSES AND CBD

Horses, as with all mammals, have an endocannabinoid system that responds to CBD.  This means we can contribute to a horse’s quality of life.  Since our equine partners cannot always tell us what is bothering them, they sometimes have symptoms long before it comes to our attention.  What we ask of them can lead to physical and mental stress. Add adverse environmental conditions, and it is easy to see the challenge for the horse to stay healthy and balanced. By stimulating the endocannabinoid system with CBD, know you are doing your best to let your horse help himself, naturally.

And while we still don’t entirely understand the endocannabinoid system and how it works, recent research shows that it’s involved in managing a whole variety of bodily processes, including:

  • Pain
  • Inflammation
  • Metabolism and appetite
  • Stress
  • Anxiety

When you or your horse consume CBD, the compound almost mimics the effects of the chemicals your body produces naturally.  In doing so, it helps give the endocannabinoid system a boost and can help restore balance to your body, as well as offer relief from a wide variety of symptoms and conditions.

The cannabinoid receptors that make up the endocannabinoid system are located all around the body.

Recommended CBD dosage can vary greatly for horses

Innate Remedies recommends 25-50 mg daily for maintenance and symptoms of moderate level. Use our dosage guide to obtain results for more severe symptoms.  Research on CBD has been limited due to its previous drug classification, but the passage of 2018 Farm Bill may open the door to new studies.  Until then, we have to rely on testimonials and personal experience.  We have heard inspiring anecdotal stories from pharmacists, chiropractors and doctors about the success human patients have experienced with CBD treatment, however veterinarians' experience has been limited.  Therefore, Innate Remedies' opinion on horse dosage has been developed by feedback from owners, trainers, and professionals.  We have talked to research people who have passed on what they know and have learned,  but not yet published.  We have talked to our friends and others who own horses and we have observed our own horses.  Here is our current views on equine dosing.

Why does Innate Remedies recommend a lower dose when compared to human dosage recommendations?

  • Horses metabolize chemicals differently than humans and dogs.  For example, there is a compound that is commonly used on horses that requires a dose ¼ of what is required for dogs.
  • Horses appear to be very efficient at absorbing and utilizing phytocannabinoids.
  • We believe that over-dosing is common, and not just with horses.  This is why we have a suggested graduated dosing plan.  CBD response works in an asymmetrical bell curve, meaning that more product does not always create a greater effect.  There is a sweet spot that works best for each individual horse as well as with humans.  Starting at 25mg for your horse will help you get to this point.  Many horses find relief for symptoms at this level.
